By Rokhaya Doucoure Develop an argument in reference to one personal case study and two reflexive references. Conclude your position on the subject. I firmly believe in the notion that a political designer is a conscious communicator. Design serves as a powerful vehicle, capable of evoking a wide range of emotions and inspiring meaningful actions in people. As emerging designers, it is our responsibility to embrace this notion in every project and creation we undertake. Throughout history there have been many instances where design can be seen to fuel social change. This idea was further exposed to be during my Self Initiated Project (SIP) where I am on the journey of creating my own font. The power of typography can often be overlooked or overshadowed by more prominent areas of design. During my research, I discovered the profound impact fonts have had in political movements and their vital role in protests for driving social change. “In Greg’s case, Hackney in the 2000s had one of the worst literacy rates in Britain; he realised that he wanted to do something for his community, and so worked on a campaign to improve literacy rates. It enabled him to witness the way people interacted with socially oriented designs. This defined his career, as he realised he wanted to use design as a tool of change.” Greg Banbury's branding and campaign materials for 'Worlds Unite'
One graphic designer and font maker who deeply inspired me on my SIP journey is Greg Banbury. Born in Hackney, he recognised the challenges faced by his community and sought out bringing about improvements through his designs. By combining diverse cultures and perspectives with his unique design style, he successfully launched a campaign that significantly improved literacy rates among his community. Studying his work and following his journey has hugely impacted me, pushing me to be more critical and assertive in my own designs. I have come to understand that our environment plays a fundamental role in shaping our perspectives, which, in turn, influences our design work. This realisation has strengthened my commitment to creating designs that have a positive impact and foster social change. bibliography 'Designing For Social Change With Greg Banbury'.
